Facts About Australia National Library of Australia

National Library is the Australia's largest library responsible for maintaining and developing national collection of library material of the world and a comprehensive library material pertaining to Australia. Established in 1960, the National Library of Australia is headquartered in Canberra and has more than 400 employees. National Library is Australia's single largest and most important resource of materials including Australian cultural heritage, Australian writers, editors and illustrators, whether published in Australia or abroad.





The National Library collects a wide source of library materials not just printed books but also online publications, manuscripts, unpublished material, newspapers, maps, posters, pictures, music, oral histories and rare books, its strength being the collection on performing arts and dance. Apart from the print collection, the National Library also has extensive materials in micro-form and a National reserve Braille Collection. The library has over 8 million Library items out of which more than 140,000 have been digitized most of which are available online. The National Library is also renowned for its largest Asian Language Collection in the Southern Hemisphere including Thai, Burmese, Chinese, Persian,Indonesian, Khmer, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian and Vietnamese.
